George Beverly Sobey husband of Eleanor (Gallant) Sobey of Route 435 Maple Glen NB, passed away Thursday May 27th at Miramichi Regional Hospital, at the age of 92.
Born in Maple Glen NB, he was the son of the late Walter and Ina Sobey. He was a member of Northumberland Lodge # 17 F & AM and was a Past Master.
George started his working career at the age of 16 at Domtar Chemicals where he spent 46 years. He then joined his wife Eleanor as a cook at the Miramichi Golf and Country Club where he became well known for his homemade rolls and pies.
George was known for his love of country music. He was inducted into the Miramichi Country Music Hall of Fame and was a regular entertainer at the jams along the river, singing and playing his guitar.
George enjoyed gardening, reading westerns and the Vessy Seed catalogue (his favorite). He doted on his pets…Bo, Nipper, Snoopy, Rusty and Bugsy, always by his side. The grandkids knew where to go for candy, Grampie had a sweet tooth.
Besides his wife Eleanor, he was survived by two daughters, Lynn Harper (Kevin) of Elliot Lake, ON and Nelda Robertson (Donnie) of Ottawa, two sons, Miles Sobey at home and Shelton Sobey (Darlene) of Maple Glen, one brother Boyd Sobey (Joan) of Woodstock NB, five grandchildren, Andrea, Lianne, Jesse, Billy and Jeffrey, ten great grandchildren, Sophie, Eva, Olivia, Kallie, Andrew, Elizabeth, Kamden, Finn, Harrison and Benjamin.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by five sisters, Donna, Iona, Eleanor, Audrey and Ruth, two brothers, Vance and Wendell and one infant sister Kathleen.
At the request of the family there will be no visitation. A private family Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday June 8, 2021 at 11a.m. at Davidson’s Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Alice Szemok officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Glen Cemetery.
