Jan Truka, 4 February 1943-22 January 2021 was in his 78th year when he passed away peacefully at Miramichi Regional Hospital. Having lost his wife of 55 years, Stania, in 2019 and his daughter-in-law Janet in 2020, he is survived by his son, David, of Harrow, Ontario; daughter Jana, granddaughter Althea and son-in-law Aldo in Italy.
His sister Marie and family in South Africa as well as his cousin Eva in the Czech Republic are mourning his passing as is his special friend Mary MacIntosh-Warren who looked after him during the last months of his life.
Jan Truka was a mining engineer, a trade that brought him from the Czech Republic to Canada in 1969. Jan was thrilled by the freedom and especially the opportunity to indulge in sports - his lifelong passion - that the open spaces and nature of the River provided him. The Miramichi Cross Country Ski Club, of which he was a founding member recently named a trail after him of which he was very proud. He was also instrumental in organising and participating in many Triathlons around the province and open water swims including in Sheila and Tracadie.
After the Heath Steele Mines shut down, Jan busied himself with various projects, as well as whistling and strumming his way through private and public events, either alone or with other musicians.
His ability to speak and understand multiple languages had him on call for international visits to the province of diplomats from Russia and other countries as translator and host. He kept up his French and scientific knowledge through the Library, where the staff always had his special publications ready.
Most of all, Jan would like to be remembered as a sportsman who helped instil the value and importance of physical fitness in many generations of people from all walks of life on the Miramichi.
Due to current Covid restrictions the family will hold a celebration of life service in spring at a date to be confirmed. Donations to the Cancer Society in his name / honour are gratefully accepted.
